Thanks to the recent winter storms, your children are probably going stir crazy from being cooped up inside. In addition to the unexpected snow days, many students are now in a winter break, which means parents are looking for ways to combat cabin fever. Luckily for residents of metro Atlanta homes, there are plenty of opportunities to engage your children without traveling far from home.
From museums to parks, there are plenty of opportunities for children to explore something new, right in their backyard. Here are some of our suggestions for the perfect winter staycation:
Tanglewood Farms in Cherokee County: With the sun expected to shine and temperatures expected to rise, this winter break is a great time for children to enjoy some fresh air and play with animals at Tanglewood Farms in Canton, Ga. From miniature donkeys to pony rides, Tanglewood Farms is as much fun as it is educational. The old western theme will only add to the enchantment for children. Tanglewood Farms is located at 171 Tanglewood Drive and is just a short drive for residents of our Cherokee County community, Estates of Fernwood Creek.
The Southern Museum: Do you have a child who is all about trains? If yes, then the answer to your winter break staycation is The Southern Museum. Located in Kennesaw, the Southern Museum in association with the Smithsonian Institution exhibits the history of railroads and the Civil War. Highlights of the museum include the General locomotive and Georgia’s “Merci Boxcar,” a thank you sent over from France following World War II. The Jolley Education Center offers children a hands-on opportunity to play with trains, puzzles, games and books. There is also an arts room where children can create a train-inspired craft to take home. The Southern Museum is located at 2829 Cherokee Street. For more information on admission prices and exhibits, call 770-427-2117.
The Historic Marietta Trolley Company: Residents of our Marietta new home communities can hop aboard a trolley to explore the city like never before. The Historic Marietta Trolley Company is the only trolley tour in town and highlights the vibrant Historic Marietta Square, beautiful Antebellum homes and the battlefields of Kennesaw Mountain. Trolley tours run rain or shine and if it is still a little cold outside don’t worry, the trolley is heated. Tours leave from 131 Church Street. For more information, call 770-425-1006.
Kennesaw Mountain: After you ride by Kennesaw Mountain, stop by for a firsthand look at the Civil War battleground. A preservation of the Atlanta Campaign that took over the area from June 19, 1864 until July 2, 1864, Kennesaw Mountain features cannons and eight miles of earthworks built by soldiers. Visitors to Kennesaw Mountain can enjoy a hike on some of the 18 miles of trails followed by a picnic in one of the designated areas.
