Say goodbye to the winter weather and hello to spring by celebrating National Kite Month from March 29 to May 4, 2014. Established by the AKA (American Kitefliers Association) and the KTAI (Kite Trade Association International), this month-long, nationwide event is sure to fill the skies with fun, and we invite you to be part of it.
Have you never flown a kite before? No problem! To make the most of your first flying experience, here are some quick tips to help your kite soar:
- Medium wind speeds (5 to 25 mph) are ideal flying conditions. Hint: When flags, leaves and bushes start to flutter, you will know the time is right to set your kite in motion!
- Not all kites are created equally, so choose the one that is best for you and the current weather.
- Deltas, Diamonds and Dragon Kites fly well in light to medium winds, about 6 to 15 mph.
- Box Kites and stickless Parafoil kites soar in stronger winds, about 8 to 25 mph.
- Start by standing with your back to the wind, holding the kite by the bridle point (the lines that form the junction between kite and flying line) and slowly release the line. In the right conditions, your kite will go right up.
- Remember to fly safely! Always fly in an open area, clear of possible dangers, including power lines and roads, and never fly your kite during inclement weather.
While the beach is always a fun place to fly a kite, there are wonderful places where you enjoy this activity near your Traton home. Swift-Cantrell Park in Kennesaw and Logan Farm Park in Acworth are ideal for residents of Cobb County homes. These parks are known for their open meadows, picnic-friendly environments and other unique outdoor amenities, from hiking trails to a fishing pond! If you live in North Fulton, check out Roswell Area Park or head over to Morgan Falls Overlook Park in Sandy Springs.
Flying a kite is a great way to spend time as a family, so get outside and celebrate National Kite Month!
